2019 Subaru STI S209: What To Know About NAIAS’s Best Car Debut

The 2019 Detroit Auto Show unveiled several new cars and concept vehicles this January, but it was the Subaru Tecnica International (STI) S209 that won over our hearts and quickened our pulses. After all, this performance car is the most powerful, agile, and supremely exhilarating Subaru STI ever made in the U-S-of-A.  Street-legal, four-wheeled rockets like this don’t come along often –perhaps the lack of saturation is a good thing for the segment – so when they pop into frame, you can bet we’re all over them.

Here’s all you need to know about the 2019 Subaru STI S209, coming to a Subaru dealer near you later this year.

Upgraded Subaru BOXER Engine

As the automaker’s first-ever S-line STI performance vehicle to be sold in America, the S209 features a boisterous 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER turbocharged engine that makes a feverish 341 horsepower. The STI’s HKS-manufactured BOXER EJ25 utilizes a low-restriction exhaust system and several strengthened alloy-forged pistons and rods to reduce body weight, which results in bumps in torque production (10% at 3,600 rpm), boost pressure (18 psi), and turbine power (6%) over the Subaru WRX STI model’s.

The STI S209 will also come with an exclusive close-ratio 6-speed manual that piles the power onto its AWD system with DCCD and Active Torque Vectoring. Three SI-Drive modes can be engaged, as well:

  • Intelligent – Improves mpg and the ability to control the vehicle’s power output;
  • Sports – Recalibrates the balance of power between ‘response’ and ‘control’;
  • Sport Sharp (S#) – Pushes zero-to-sixty times into Guinness World Record territory.

Perhaps one of the coolest things about the new S209 is the incorporation of Subaru’s Intercooler Water-Spray System. Pull a steering-wheel-mounted paddle (labeled ‘I/C Spray’) to activate the system on demand, which will produce bursts of water-cooled air that ultimately tells engine intake temperatures to take a chill pill.

High-Performance Styling

Expect an aggressive and bold look for the new STI S209 when it arrives at your Subaru dealership.

On the outside, the S209 will be available in World Rally Blue Pearl and Crystal White Pearl paint colors. The vehicle features wide, flared fenders that bulge out to accommodate stout Brembo brakes and all-new Dunlop® SP Sport Maxx® GT600A summer tires, which wrap around 19-inch forged-alloy BBS wheels. These tires are exclusively made for this Subaru STI and contribute to the vehicle’s noted 1.0g of lateral grip. Additionally, you’ll find side-fender vents to maximize engine cooling and reduce air drag, as well as a carbon-fiber rear spoiler/wing that makes a substantial amount of downforce.

If you shrink down and look under the STI S209’s body, you’ll notice a suspension system God would be jealous of. We’re talking about enhanced STI-tuned Bilstein dampers, rear draw stiffeners, a lithe tower bar, and pillow-ball bushings—all of which contribute directly to the Subaru S209’s handling and turning stability.

Inside, the cabin is flowing with magic like a shaman’s voodoo hut. Features include Recaro-manufactured ergonomic seats (and an eight-way power driver’s seat), an Ultrasuede® steering wheel, S-model trim accents, a large center storage compartment, and S209 badging throughout.

Hurry While Supplies Last

Unfortunately, a select number of new Subaru STI models will be built and sold in America, meaning millions of us will have to deal with collective feelings of envy toward the 200 drivers who secured their S209s early. Don’t be one of those people. If you’re interested in becoming a Subaru S209 owner, now’s the time to start your campaign. Sign up to receive STI updates or speak with your Subaru car dealer for more details.
