2019 Subaru Outback: A Superhero Wagon-SUV The World Needs

Look! Over on the road! It’s an SUV! It’s a wagon! It’s the 2019 Subaru Outback!

Cheesy callbacks to the 1950’s show Adventures of Superman aside, there’s something truly special about this refreshed Outback. It’s in the mold of a wagon yet has the extra cargo and passenger space of a crossover, and it comes in six heroic trims. DC Comics, eat your heart out.

Two Engines, One Superior Ride

The 2019 Outback is powered by one of two engines.

Stationed on all 2.5i trims (base, Premium, Limited, and Touring) is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that makes 175 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, allowing it to tow up to 2,700 pounds. Fitted in the 3.6R Limited and Touring trims is a locomotive-like BOXER 3.6L 6-cylinder engine that produces 256 horsepower and 247 pound-foot of torque, allowing it to tow up to 3,000 pounds.

Both engines are paired with a CVT that delivers power to all four wheels – Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a Godsend – allowing the well-tuned Outback to really showcase its superhero handling capabilities on bumpy paths. Truly, once this Subaru enters the phone booth and changes into its crime-fighting, off-roading attire, there are few wagons or crossovers in the market that can match up. Add on its 8.7-inch ground clearance and X-MODE system, and you’re looking at a vehicle that’s perfectly suited for the road less traveled.

Best of all, because the Lineartronic CVT is so advanced, the 2019 Outback returns up to 32 MPG on the highway, making it the most fuel-efficient wagon in its class.

Clark Kent on the Outside, Superman on the Inside

Donning its handsome glasses – those halogen Daytime Running Headlamps and fog lights are dreamy, right? – the 2019 Outback may look like your standard Subaru, but we see right through that mysterious façade. Inside are more splashes of comfort and high-end tech than you’d expect in such an affordable SUV or wagon.

Aided by a soft suspension that soaks up speed bumps with ease, the new Outback’s front and rear seats offer 24-hour comfort (if that’s your idea of a road trip). Supple leather seats are available in four colors – we recommend the Java Brown Leather option for that upscale, premium look – that really tie the cabin together, especially matched with the exceptional cushions, padded elbow rests, and power-lumbar seatback (driver-side).

Climate controls are right within reach, as are seat heaters, and the fantastic 8-inch touchscreen with SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia gives drivers access to a whole slew of apps, including iHeartRadio, Yelp, Apple CarPlay, Pandora, Android Auto, and navigation. Those premium beats come straight out of the Outback’s equally premium Harman Kardon 12-speaker, 576-watt audio system.

When it comes to spaciousness, the Subaru Outback is the Christopher Reeve of its class. Its doors are wide, allowing for easy access. Front legroom is better than even the Ford Edge. Max cargo volume comes in at an impressive 73.3 cubic feet, which is an added bonus on top of the standard roof rails and crossbars that come with every Outback. Even small-item storage is fantastic; a large compartment positioned near the shifter is a great place for smartphones, and its center console fits bulky items quite well.

Keeping You Safe is Job #1

When you’re in a pickle, the 2019 Subaru Outback serves as your guardian thanks to its EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which has been found to reduce rear-end crashes by up to 85%. For the first time ever, this safety system is standard on all Outback models. It includes adaptive cruise control, front collision mitigation, lane-keep assist with sway warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alerts, and a fancy pre-collision throttle management system.

STARLINK Safety and Security is available on select Outback models, and it comes with automatic collision notification, enhanced roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery. IIHS safety ratings have not yet been released for the 2019 Subaru Outback, but the 2018 Outback’s Top Safety Pick+ designation should carry over to the new model.

Did you know that you may also be able to save $200 on your Liberty Mutual Insurance policy if you have a Subaru Outback with EyeSight?
