Need something fun to do this Labor Day in Birmingham? Ditch the backyard barbecues and family gatherings—this extended holiday break is all about you! Here are a handful of Labor Day weekend events that are perfectly suited for adults.
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour (Aug. 31)
If you haven’t yet marked your calendars for this Birmingham concert, hold your horses on planning the rest of your Labor Day shenanigans! The great southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd are back with special guests Hank Williams Jr., The Marshall Tucker Band, and Blackberry Smoke—and they’re all calling for you.
Buy your tickets and catch these Rock & Roll Hall of Famers when they say good-bye at the Oak Mountain Amphitheater on August 31.
Move & Groove Storytime (Aug. 31)
Parents of Birmingham, here’s your Labor Day respite from the chaos known as “parenthood.” Bring your small children into the Homewood Public Library at 10:30 am, and they’ll be zapped of all their energy before lunchtime. Tales will be told, dances will be danced, and smiles will be aplenty as the library’s hosts flip the pages of some favorite childhood stories.
Free for all, this Labor Day event in Homewood, AL, is a great excuse to get out of the house. Visit the Homewood Public Library site for more information.
UAB Men’s Soccer For A Cure Classic (Aug. 31 & Sept. 2)
Four soccer clubs, four matches, and two nights—that’s the gist of the Soccer For A Cure Classic. Now in its 21st year, this soccer fundraiser in Birmingham benefits the UAB Children’s Hospital and other local Alabama cancer-research and treatment facilities.
You can read more about this fundraising event and purchase tickets at the UAB Blazers website.
2018 Alabama Dart Championship (Aug. 31 – Sept. 2)
Hosted at the Birmingham Marriot, this annual soft-tip dart championship pits the best throwers (aka. dartsmiths) against each other. More than 200 players from across Alabama and the country participated in the 2017 championship, which dished out over $8k in prize money. This year’s Alabama Dart Championship should be bigger than ever.
Birmingham Brunch Crawl (Sept. 1)
Known as the best “brunch crawl” in Alabama, this special Labor Day event is as unique as the day is long. If you’re over 21 years of age, hop from restaurant to restaurant all afternoon, sampling delicious brunch food, treats, mimosas, and Bloody Mary cocktails. (Just be sure to have your Uber or Lyft app ready to go, or bribe a friend to be your DD.)
Grab your tickets online at the official Facebook page for about $13. Participating venues currently include Sky Castle, Tin Roof Birmingham, Bird’s Bar and Pizza, SideBar, Moe’s Original BBQ, and Innisfree Irish Pub.
Pre-Labor Day Blues Party (Sept. 1)
Kick off your Labor Day weekend in Birmingham at Club M’s Pre-Labor Day Blues Party. Performances by Mose Stovall and Ms. Aretta will have you grooving all evening. Oh, and holiday drink prices will also be available, because why not?
Reserve your spot for about $10 by visiting their Facebook page, or pay $20 at the door on September 1.
The Police Tribute Night (Sept. 1)
On Friday, September 1, Saturn will pay tribute to one of the most iconic and influential English rock bands of our generation: The Police. Local musicians from all over Birmingham will come together to cover Sting & Co.’s top hits, including “Every Breath You Take,” “Roxanne,” and “Message in a Bottle.” Could you start your Labor Day weekend any better?
