Independence Day may fall on a Wednesday in 2018, but that won’t stop the fireworks from lighting up the sky! As you prepare for your own holiday festivities, be sure to spritz some bug spray, rub in the sunscreen, and set aside time for these free 4th of July events and firework shows near Birmingham.
Thunder on the Mountain 2018 (Birmingham)
When? 9:00 PM
Where? Vulcan Park & Museum (map)
What? No Independence Day event in all of Alabama can compete with this Birmingham July 4th celebration. At 9 PM on the dot, rain or shine, a 20-minute, choreographed fireworks show for the ages begins, sizzling the sky above the iron man, Vulcan. *NOTE: The Vulcan Park will close at 6 PM, however, so you’ll want to get seats to this Birmingham fireworks display somewhere else. Prime viewing spots include Five Points South, Homewood (see below), the UAB campus, or Mountain Brook. You can also watch the Birmingham fireworks on WBRC Fox 6 News live at 9 PM.
July 4th Festival (Homewood)

What? Get the perfect view of the Birmingham July 4th fireworks at Homewood’s festival! As you wait, enjoy the inflatable bounce houses, rides, and crafts that will line Downtown Homewood. Find live updates straight from the horse’s mouth at the Homewood Parks Facebook page or Twitter feed.
Smith Lake Park Independence Day Festival (Cullman)
When? All Day to 9:00 PM

What? This Cullman July 4th event is a local holiday favorite. Independence Day activities include live entertainment and music, arts and crafts, swimming, putt-putt, water slides, and more. July 4th Celebration Fireworks (Gadsden)
When? 9:00 PM
Where? Mort Glosser Amphitheater (map)
What? Head to downtown Gadsden for some Independence Day explosiveness above the Coosa. BYO camping chairs, blankets, and libations to watch the Gadsden fireworks from the parking lots at Coosa Landing or the amphitheater’s Convention Hall.
July 4th Fireworks (Guntersville)
When? 9:00 PM
Where? Civitan Park (map)
What? Nothing out of the ordinary with this Alabama fireworks show—just pure, unadulterated, holiday excitement! These July 4th fireworks in Guntersville can be seen from the Civitan Park Pier and all down Lurleen B. Wallace Drive (or really anywhere along the northern edge overlooking Browns Creek and the Tennessee River). Event details are scarce at guntersvilleal.org, but what more do you need to enjoy these Independence Day fireworks?
52nd Annual Spirit of America Fireworks Show (Decatur)
When? 8:45 PM
Where? Point Mallard (map)
What? Having an amazing run for over half a century (wow!), this Decatur July 4th event gets bigger each year. Splash around at Point Mallard Water Park in the afternoon, enjoy a picnic dinner at Halley Field, then hunker down along the coast to watch the Decatur fireworks go off above the river. Independence Day 1776 (Montevallo)
When? 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM

What? Although not free, this Montevallo 4th of July celebration costs just $5 per person, which is chump change considering all that’s in store for you! Before the night’s fireworks to celebrate America’s 242nd birthday, you can meet (fake) Benjamin Franklin, swing dance at Liberty Hall, create sidewalk art, climb a rockin’ rock wall, play Jenga, and take part in about a billion other activities. Freedom Festival (Oxford)
When? All Day to 9:00 PM
Where? Oxford Civic Center (map)
What? The morning begins with a holiday parade to the Civic Center, followed by bike and trike races, a pet show, free carnival games, magic shows, and swimming at the Oxford Lake Pool. Trussville Freedom Celebration (Trussville)
